Mentor meeting 9/16/10

Had a great meeting with my mentor last week. I got some new ideas and gave up on some that didn't work out so well. I also visited the Museum of Contemporary Art while I was in Chicago.
Also, my mentor had a new show opening (Kelly Kaczynski, "The Stagehand's Unseen" at Threewalls gallery, Chicago) (three-walls.org).

new work

My latest piece (at right- detail below) is a gouache, ink, and collage work on paper of a pothole near my house. the shadows are satelite maps that zoom in and out of the street location.
More to follow. SE

trials

This is another technique I'd wanted to try: silverpoint on paper. It's not finished but I've put it away for awhile to have time for other things.

trials

When I got back from residency and my first mentor meeting there were several things I wanted to try including working large - this is part of a large ink-on-paper "doodle."

work in progress

This piece was in progress when this photo was taken but now is almost done. I had to figure out how to work with the vellum and ink. This is 25" x 40" ink and ink wash on vellum over acrylic and collaged map on paper. It's a map of the gulf coast and the oil slick.
Technically, it's not as well done as I'd like and I had alot of false starts and redoes.
I'll get the final result posted soon.

work in progress

Study for a larger piece based on the flow of the Mississippi. I was going to try to integrate the flow of pesticides from the Midwest that create a "dead zone" at the mouth of the Mississippi. (There's SO much to be proud of in Illinois! We have Blagojevich, too!)

Right now, I've put this project on hold.

work in progress

This is a work in progress, presently about 30" x 40." It will eventually be collaged paper sections with gouache, ink, and colored pencil, incorporating a map 0f Europe. It is based on the ash cloud from the Icelandic volcano that shut down European air travel earlier this year.

Alumni Exhibition 9/18/10

This is my entry in the Illinois State University "Alumni Spectacular 2010." (This is actually on white paper - the edit didn't come through very well) I wanted to enter one of the ink drwings I did for Residency 2 but they were too large, so I made a new but similar one that's 11" x 14."

The exhibition runs 9/18/10 - 10/17/10, Illinois State University Galleries, Normal, IL. Sorry, they don't have a good link.
